Vacuum seed counters draw seeds onto a perforated head with a pump, tip off the excess, then release the pattern onto paper or a tray. They are quick for regular, evenly shaped seed such as cereals and brassicas, but small, light or irregular seeds roll off or stick in multiples, and every seed pattern needs its own counting head and a pump. Suppliers include Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Hoffman Manufacturing and Fison.

A general-purpose liquid-handling robot that, with the optional Gripper, can move labware and pick items on its deck. It suits fully automated genotyping pipelines already built on Opentrons, but loose-seed dispensing needs custom method development and SBS-format labware, and per-pick handling is slow next to a mesh plate.

Automated tray seeders such as the Semanthea vacuum-drum systems sow whole plug trays in seconds for commercial nurseries. They excel at high-volume, uniform sowing of pelleted or regular seed into soil plugs, but they are built for greenhouse production, not lab germination-paper or DNA-plate formats, and carry a large footprint and price.

Placing seeds by hand with forceps or a counting board needs no equipment and handles any seed, but it is slow, tiring and inconsistent across a plate: exactly the error-prone step a dispenser removes.
